GLCC to take the fight to producers of bio-fabricated materials
Members of the Global Leather Coordinating Committee (GLCC) met in Hong Kong on March 14. The GLCC brings together the three international leather organisations: the International Council of Tanners (ICT); the International Council of Hides, Skins and Leather Traders Associations (ICHSLTA); and the International Union of Leather Chemists and Technologists Societies (IULTCS). A total of 17 representatives from the three groups attended the Hong Kong gathering.

As a result of the discussions on the day, the GLCC has decided to become more active in the debate surrounding labelling of bio-fabricated materials, seeking to engage more with the “negative claims the firms developing these materials tend to make about the leather industry in promotion of their products”.

Among the other determinations to come out of the Hong Kong meeting is that the GLCC will monitor leather labelling issues around the world and press for “clear and accurate regulations and enforcement” so that consumers are not misled about the products they purchase.

It will also monitor initiatives that seek to ascribe an environmental footprint to leather, such as the European modelling of the product environmental footprint for leather and the FAO-facilitated LEAP (Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance) Partnership. GLCC delegates will also continue to monitor the work of industry standards and certification bodies that regulate the trade, such as the Leather Working Group (LWG), Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC), and Responsible Leather initiative. The aim of this monitoring activity will be to ensure that guidelines are “fair, not duplicative, and take into full account the specific requirements of the hides, skins and leather industry”.

The next GLCC meeting will be hosted by ICT in Shanghai at the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) in late August.
