More hides reached Brazilian tanneries last year

Official figures show that Brazil slaughter 30.8 million head of cattle in 2017, an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous year. The figure fell in each of the three preceding years.

Statistics agency IBGE said Brazil’s tanneries received just over 34 million hides in 2017, 1.3% up on the figure for 2016. Some of the hides coming into Brazilian tanneries were from cattle slaughtered at the end of 2016; others were from outside Brazil, hence the higher number.

IBGE also said 96.8% of these hides were chrome-tanned.
