Figures released in March for the period ending December 2017 show that feedlots across Australia at that point held a total of just over 973,000 head of cattle. This represents a fall of 5% compared to the quarter ending in September 2017, but an increase of 4% compared to December 2016.

Queensland was the state with by far the highest number, 519,000 head, a fall of 4%. However, in New South Wales, the figure was up by 11% compared to December 2016, reaching 317,000 head. Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia also recorded increases, but their cattle-on-feed totals are much smaller.
