Leather Pipeline: what we have now is a “leather Babylon”
World Leather’s exclusive market intelligence report, Leather Pipeline, says in its March 20 edition that it is now difficult to think of the leather sector as a single industry. Instead, the report suggests, the leather market now consists of many different markets with practically no correlation or interdependence.

“Automotive, luxury, casual shoe, premium upholstery and industrial tanners are all markets on their own with their own fixed supply chains,” the report says.

It goes on to say traditional market segments such as sheepskin, split or bovine leather have now become “universes on their own”.

As a result of this increased fragmentation, its says the assumptions that cheaper leather will lead to more consumption and that demand is there and will grow as more consumers become more wealthy are no longer valid. It warns that these assumptions have been the basis for a large number of industry studies and forecasts, suggesting that these, too, are no longer valid.

It insists that, for all these reasons, the leather pipeline has now become “a leather Babylon”.
