Industry must create more consumer passion for leather

The chief executive of tanning group PrimeAsia, Jon Clark, has said the global leather industry faces a real challenge from negative publicity and that he believes the Leather Naturally initiative can help address it.

However, speaking at a Leather Naturally discussion in Hong Kong on March 15, he said that, without unity, it will be impossible to face up to the opposition of campaign groups and producers of alternative materials. “A handful of people on their own are not going to make this happen,” he said.

He revealed that in the recent past, one of PrimeAsia’s footwear customers, when bringing its materials buying and design teams together to plan new collections would put on display far more samples of leather than of non-leather shoe upper materials. “Now that’s reversed,” Mr Clark said. “Now if that customer looks at 100 materials, 80 of them will be alternatives to leather. We haven’t been able to get our message out to customers like that effectively. Changing public sentiment is how to make an impact and we all have to work harder to create passion among consumers for leather.”
