School initiative wins Tannery of the Year special project award

A new prize was on offer to finalists for the first time at the 2018 Tannery of the Year awards, one that gives recognition to initiatives tanners have put in place to help employees, the wider community or the environment.

The first winner of the special project award was Turkish leather manufacturing group Sepiciler for its work in launching a new primary school in Izmir.

A famous television presenter in Turkey, Aziz Üstel, and his wife, Filiz Üstel, have set up an education foundation, UKEB. UKEB’s first primary school in Izmir is in the Sepici family’s historical home in the city.

The school is fee-paying but is of some social significance because, in the programme the teachers and children follow, the emphasis is on science, technology, music and art.
