Follow the link for the final report from the current Tannery of the Year programme. For this issue, we returned to Turkish tanning group Sepiciler, which was named Tannery of the Year for Europe in 2013. A lot has happened in the five years since its triumph and we travelled to Turkey to find out why 2017 was an especially extraordinary year for the company.
There is also a look at one of Sepiciler’s customers, accessories brand Jon Hart Design. It is proud of its ‘Handcrafted in the US’ products but travels further afield to find what it calls its “top leathers”.
As with all of our Tannery of the Year reports, we also offer readers a wider view of the leather industry in the surrounding country. At a time when leather is struggling to recover lost ground in the footwear market, Turkish leather exporters see this sector as an increasingly attractive market for their materials.
The magazine’s technical section includes a round-up of the latest industry seminar organised by Lanxess and an exclusive interview with Hans van Haarst, chief executive of Smit & zoon. We also hear from a London-based company that has developed a photoluminescent leather.
This issue’s Beast to Beauty feature focuses on Brazilian footwear brand Carmen Steffens. Unlike most other footwear brands based in Franca, it specialises in women’s shoes. It also runs its own retail network and has its own tannery.
We stay in Brazil for an extensive special report that explores why there is optimism in the Brazilian leather industry following a difficult twelve months. It includes comments from CICB and São Paulo-based fashion designer Walter Rodrigues, as well as details of a visit to Brazil’s oldest tannery. We also discuss how JBS is working to restore its reputation after the most turbulent year in its history.
