Mr Zhang submitted a bid for the award to support his study of the potential for small-angle neutron scattering to make leather stronger. IULTCS has said the idea could contribute to the production of leather with higher tensile strength. It could also lead to the development of new syntans or tannages that incorporate the new cross-linking chemistry.
It added that Mr Zhang’s project could also help us understand the effect of different mineral tannages on the physical properties of leather and help tanners find “environment-friendly alternatives” to the tannages they use at the moment.
Dr Luis Zugno, chair of the IULTCS research committee, which awards the grant, said this year’s campaign, the fourth IULTCS has run, attracted a large number of innovative research topics. He said the quality of applications has improved too. “This indicates the growing importance and interest in this grant,” he added.
