ISA TanTec prepares to celebrate 15 years of LITE leather

05/02/2018
Tanning group ISA TanTec will celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of its Low Impact On The Environment (LITE) concept this year.

It established LITE as a brand in 2003. Its efforts to save water and energy that year included the incorporation of controlled wetlands for the first time at its tannery in Vietnam, Saigon TanTec. However, executive chairman, Tom Schneider, has said that he and his team realised as long ago as the 1990s that they had to find ways to control the impact on the environment of their leather manufacturing operations. He said that, to this day, ISA TanTec is “continually working on ways to reduce emissions”, mostly by saving on its use of water and energy.

In 2017, ISA TanTec has said its three tanneries, in China, Vietnam and the US, were together saving 2.4 million litres of water per day, compared to industry benchmarks. It has calculated that this would be enough to support the water provision to a town in India with a population of almost 100,000 people.

Also in 2017, the group has calculated that it saved more than 100 million kilowatt hours of energy, again compared to industry benchmarks.

“We believe our LITE concept can be an inspiration to others,” Mr Schneider said, “and we have had several delegations visit our tanneries to learn from the LITE production methods.”
