Extra steps in Turkey to discourage raw material exports

Turkey’s ministry for the economy has increased the customs charges that will apply to exports of semi-processed leather.

Under the new rules, extra customs duties of 20 US cents per square-foot will apply to wet blue sheepskins, while an extra 50 US cents per kilo will apply to wet-salted cattle hides.

The intention here is to make it easier for Turkish tanners to add value on home soil to the country’s raw material, but reports say tanners and traders have asked the government to take less punitive measures.
