Portuguese tanning industry has big plans for 2018

The Portuguese tanning industry plans to implement a number of initiatives in 2018 to become more competitive in domestic and international markets, according to Nuno Carvalho, president of tanning industry representative body APIC.

The first of these will involve closer collaboration with the country’s footwear industry with the intention of revitalising the ‘Made in Portugal’ label.

Mr Carvalho said APIC will also work to “combat the increased use of synthetic materials”. One way it will do this is by launching campaigns to protect terms like ‘leather’, ‘couro’ and ‘pelle’, which are too often misused and can mislead consumers.

Among the technology-related projects APIC will be working on in 2018 is BioNature, a programme investigating biodegradable leathers. It will focus on developing leathers using methods free of heavy metals, but without diminishing the quality of the material.
