Why garment leathers matter so much to Turkish tanners

Commentators in Turkey have highlighted how much extra value tanners can add to the country’s raw material resources by developing leather for garments rather than for footwear.

Calculations show that the export value per kilo of garment leathers is much higher.

Specifically, exports of double-face garment leathers can bring in $175 per kilo, while shipments to customers overseas of nappa leather for garments can bring in $130.

In contrast, the average export value of a pair of Turkish-made shoes is currently $12.
