Toyota and Mazda to build new plant in Alabama

Japanese automotive manufactures Toyota and Mazda have chosen Huntsville, Alabama as the location for a new joint production plant in the US.

The companies signed a cooperation agreement in August 2017, saying they would work together on a range of projects, including a joint production facility in the US.

A total of $1.6 billion will be invested in the plant, with equal funding contributions from each company. It will have an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, with production split evenly between a new Mazda crossover model for the North American market and the Toyota Corolla.

The plant is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs with production scheduled to begin by 2021, subject to approval and authorisation by antitrust agencies.
