After 57 years Brazil’s first Mostardini press is still going strong
One of Brazil’s oldest tanneries, Curtume Della Torre in Franca, is the proud owner of the first hydraulic leather press installed in the South American country by Italian tanning machinery provider Mostardini. And what’s more, the press is still in perfect working condition and is in use every day.

Production director Antonio Della Torre has told leatherbiz that the family-run company invested in the press in 1961. “We’ve continued to invest and have later versions too, of course,” he said, “but the first one still works very well.”

He said Mostardini’s version of events is that its presses from that time were made from disused tanks from World War II. “That means it’s very strong,” Mr Della Torre said, “and that must be why it has lasted so long.”

The Della Torre tannery has been in production in Franca since 1886.
