Dior invites artists to use “the medium of leather craftsmanship”
Luxury leathergoods brand Dior is running a second edition of a programme that invites artists to “revisit” the Lady Dior bag that it first produced in 1995. It ran the initiative, called the Dior Lady Art project, for the first time in 2016.

This time, it has asked ten artists to “unveil their personal vision of the timeless bag and transpose their creativity to the medium of leather craftsmanship”. The artists are Lee Bul, John Giorno, Hong Hao, Jack Pierson, Friedrich Kunath, Namsa Leuba, Betty Mariani, Jamilla Okubo, Spencer Sweeney and David Wiseman.

Among the first to respond to the call, South Korean artist Lee Bul has produced a bag covered with a dozen tiny mirrors that are slanted in different directions, making the bag appear to be one big shattered mirror. Swiss-Guinean artist Namsa Leuba’s idea uses a complex stitching technique to sew pieces together like puzzle pieces.

For his part, David Wiseman has proposed two ideas, one a completely transparent bag made of perforated leather and the other (see image) a bag that, according to Dior, “reprises the traditional couture quilting technique, adding a floral motif”.
