Tata International’s leather division recently celebrated the unexpected success of a particular leathergoods product.

In the second half of 2017, the company introduced a new range of passport holders and secured permission to offer them to the public at passport offices across India. Options include a standard leather passport wallet and a premium leather version.

Using leather from Tata International’s tannery at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, its leathergoods manufacturing team in Chennai began production in August.

The company anticipated sales of around 10,000 units per week. However, long before the end of 2017, total sales had already passed 500,000. Soon, the team in Chennai was producing 18,000 passport holders per day to keep up with demand.
