The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has requested government financial support for the up-grading of the common effluent treatment plant in the Korangi leather manufacturing cluster in Karachi.

PTA chairman, Amanullah Aftab, presented the request to a senior official in the ministry of commerce at a meeting at the start of January.

Mr Aftab also said the industry would benefit from a removal of custom duty on imports of wet blue, which currently add 4% to the cost of the semi-processed material. He also asked for funding to help individual tanneries improve effluent treatment, as well as help in paying for international testing bodies to confirm that finished leather produced in Pakistan meets the requirements of international customers.
