More leather will be part of Cath Kidston push in Japan

Accessory chain Cath Kidston has confirmed reports in Asian business media that it intends to double the number of stores it runs in Japan, with the total rising to around 55.

Chief executive, Kenny Wilson, said two separate studies by different consultancies suggested demand for the company’s “pretty, feminine, hand-drawn print” designs in Japan is strong enough to support this level of growth.

Other parts of its strategy for growth in Asia include making more bags and other products from leather rather than from vinyl.

As well as Japan, Mr Wilson said he believes the brand can grow in South Korea and in Thailand, but he also said Cath Kidston will scale back its presence in China. Not only will this mean fewer stores in the Chinese market, where he said rents are high and profitability low, but also producing fewer accessories in China. Switching part of its production to Vietnam or Cambodia instead will mean easier access to the Japanese market, he suggested, owing to “a huge difference in duties”.
