Pakistan’s tanners export much more leather, but earn less money

The Pakistan leather industry achieved export revenues of almost $310 million in the first four months of the current financial year, (July to October 2017). This represents a dip of almost 2.5% compared to the same months last year.

In terms of volume, exports of finished leather went up substantially, reaching 10.2 million square-metres, a rise of more than 70% year on year. But in value terms, finished leather exports brought in $103 million this year, 9.5% less than a much lower volume of finished leather exports earned in the July-October period in 2016.

Exports of footwear fell too, by 9.8% in volume and by 3.8% in value. Shoe companies exported 2.8 million pairs between July and October 2017, bringing in $30.9 million.
