The prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, formally opened the 2017 Bangladesh Leather, Footwear and Leathergoods International Sourcing Show in Dhaka on November 16.

During her speech, Sheikh Hasina announced that Bangladesh will establish two new leather production zones, one near the port city of Chittagong and the other at Rajshahi in the west of the country.

In the speech, the prime minister committed to continuing for at least the next five years a policy of offering leather-sector exporters a 15% cash incentive on export revenues.

Bangladesh’s exports from the leather industry in fiscal 2016-17 were around $1.2 billion, but Sheikh Hasina said she expects this to rise to $5 billion by 2021 and she urged exporters to develop new products and find new export markets.
