New PTA chairman calls for action on “illogical” raw materials measures

The Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) has a new chairman, Amanullah Aftab.

In initial remarks on taking up the role, Mr Aftab called on the country’s government to ease the burden of doing business that tanners face by removing additional duty of 20% on imported leather chemicals. Tanners already pay 20% customs duty to bring in even “fundamental” chemicals for producing leather; additional regulatory duty of 20% is causing a further increase in “already exorbitant” production costs.

He also requested the removal of quarantine conditions that the authorities in Pakistan impose on imported wet blue, pickled and raw hides and skins. Mr Aftab called this quarantine “illogical” since the imported raw material already arrives with quarantine certificates, a mandatory element for importing them into Pakistan.
