Leather Pipeline: Can leather salvage its standing in footwear?

The industry cannot afford to wait until the beauty and value of leather are rediscovered, it warns. If this takes too long, the production facilities and know-how that have helped leather take its place at the forefront of shoe manufacturing will be lost and it will be too late to restore them.
Although it won’t be easy to convince companies to make leather shoes again, it adds, a joint effort that leads to benefits for everyone involved is the solution. Shoe manufacturers will only return to using leather if it benefits them financially, it says.
To achieve this, leather must emphasise its own unique qualities rather than trying to be more like its artificial competitions, the report urges.
Away from footwear, the report highlights the potential for increased use of leather in other market segments, most notably upholstery and automotive.
