‘Environment’ has more mentions than ‘economy’ in Xi speech

While messages on the economy and on China’s standing in the world dominated reporting of the speech President Xi Jinping gave in Beijing on October 18, business media outlet Bloomberg said the environment and terms linked to it had received more mentions.

Speaking at the opening of the nineteenth Communist Party Congress, Mr Xi said the government will introduce a new project called ‘Beautiful China’ into its future development plans and will increase the regulation of natural resources and ecosystems.

Increased environmental regulations have been a catalyst for consolidation in many manufacturing sectors in China, including the leather industry. In 2011, there were 1,800 tanneries operating across the country. Now, the China Leather Industry Association puts the number of medium- and large-sized tanneries operating in China at around 600.
