Growth ahead of target for Chinese economy
During a long speech at the nineteenth Communist Party Congress, China’s president, Xi Jinping, said the country’s economy grew by 6.9% in the first nine months of 2017. The government’s target for 2017 is growth of 6.5%.

Mr Xi was addressing the congress, which takes place once every five years, for the first time as president. He said China’s economy has been transitioning “from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality development”.

He added that the government will support efforts by Chinese enterprises to become “world-class, globally competitive firms”.
