Wolverine sells Michigan footwear factory

Footwear group Wolverine World Wide has decided to sell its manufacturing facility in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Wolverine is selling its US Department of Defense (DoD) contract business to Original Footwear, a Tennessee-based footwear manufacturer specialising in products for the Department of Defense under the Altama brand. Because Original qualifies as a small business, it is able to bid for DoD contracts not available to larger companies like Wolverine. Wolverine said on announcing the development that it views this option as being “in the best interest” of its employees in Big Rapids.

“With new ownership, we feel the factory is better positioned to win additional contracts that will retain important manufacturing jobs for the community,” said Wolverine chief executive, Blake Krueger.
