Colombian tanneries unite to boost their earnings

Five tanneries in Colombia have joined forces to increase their exports of high-quality finished leather for use in luxury leathergoods and footwear.

They have created a new company, named Leather Andina after the Andes mountain region, with support from Colombia’s Chamber of Commerce and business and innovation group Innpulsa.

The tanneries decided to come together after realising how much more lucrative it could be for them to export finished leather for the luxury industry rather than raw material or wet blue.

Leather Andina aims to double its exports in this category within three years. To this end, it has invested $2 million in machinery and technology.

The five Colombian tanneries involved in this project are: Nember, Copiel Limitada, Toscana, Taner de Colombia and Hugo de Jésus Betancur.
