UK National Leather Collection to go on display
11/08/2017
The National Leather Collection features over 5,000 items and a reference library with over 3,000 volumes about leather. It includes pieces from history up to the modern day, much of which was been in storage for decades.
"This is an incredibly exciting display. It has something to impress everybody,” said Victoria Green, administrator for the National Leather Collection. “Leather is in everything and it's amazing to see how much of a part it has played in history.”
Among the items that will go in show are fragments from Tutankhamen's tomb, sections of a ninth-century Koran, a saddle owned by Queen Victoria, and a travelling casket of King Charles V.
The exhibition, which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will have its “soft opening” on September 9. Entry will be free as part of an open day. Ms Green has said the Museum of Leather Craft hopes it will one day become a free, permanent feature.
The National Leather Collection has launched a crowdfunding page to raise money for new display cases for its exhibition.
