CLE protests against new Indian sales tax

India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has written formally to the federal government to protest about a new sales tax that came into force on July 1. The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an attempt by the national government in New Delhi to replace different rates of indirect taxation in different parts of India with a single system for the whole country.

However, the CLE has complained about several changes that GST imposes on the leather industry. For example, under the new system, a 12% sales tax applies to finished leather and 5% to crust. Tanners will now also have to pay a rate of 18% in GST for the services of common effluent treatment plants.
