Bangladesh’s exports of finished leather for the month of July 2017, the first month of the country’s new financial year, were down in value by 9.2% compared to the same month in 2016, reaching almost $13.6 million.

However, the wider leather sector’s export revenues for the month were up by 26.2% year on year at $116.7 million thanks, largely, to an increase of 30% in the exports of leather shoes from the Asian country to almost $65 million. Shipments of leathergoods also rose substantially, reaching $38.5 million, 38.4% up on the figure for last July.

In the course of the 2016-2017 financial year, the Bangladeshi leather industry brought in export revenues of more than $1.2 billion. The government has set it a new target for 2017-2018 of almost $1.4 billion.
