Only the steering-wheel survives Tesla’s leather volte-face

All seats in the latest versions of the brand’s Model S and Model X electric cars will be covered in “non-animal seating material”, sources have told leatherbiz, confirming that “this is the only option available”.
The same sources said Tesla had made the decision to remove leather seating options “based on demand”, and insisted the synthetic material it has chosen to use instead is “softer, more durable and easier to clean”.
This represents a remarkable turnaround for the automotive company considering that it gave a commitment to continuing to use leather at its shareholders’ meeting in 2015. At that meeting, a Tesla shareholder who was also part of an anti-leather campaign group asked the car company’s board to ban leather. The board was unanimous in its rejection of the proposal.
Tesla produced a total of 83,922 vehicles in 2016.
