Bangladesh may set up another new tanning zone

With the move to the new tanning zone near Dhaka far from complete, the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) has announced plans to set up another new leather production centre at the Mirsarai Economic Zone, close to the country’s second-largest city, Chittagong. BEZA said on making the announcement that a feasibility study will begin in the near future.

Sekander Mia, president of Chittagong Rawhide Warehouse Traders’ Co-operative Association, said in response to the news that there are around 200 hide warehouses in Chittagong and 20,000-25,000 people are directly and indirectly involved with the hide business there. The region supplies around 35% of all raw hides in Bangladesh.
