India’s Green Tribunal reiterates tannery pollution warning

18/07/2017
India’s National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ruled that dumping effluents within 500 metres of the River Ganges will result in a fine.

The warning is the result of a trial that has lasted a number of years and has resulted in Kanpur-based tanneries closed by NGT inspectors.

Local press reported that if an action plan was not submitted in six weeks, the local government could close more tanneries and relocate them to a new site with a common effluent treatment plant.

However, these issues have been under the spotlight for more than 10 years.
