Cattle slaughter on the rise in Argentina
12/07/2017
Slaughter in the first half of this year registered an increase of 5.9%, but livestock industry commentators have said they expect the pace of growth to pick up in the second half of the year.
They are confident of a bigger increase in slaughter numbers because the number of cattle going into feedlots in recent months has grown, reflecting end-of-cycle changes in farmers’ cattle retention policies.
However, packer companies in Argentina have complained of a negative impact on their businesses of a sharp fall in the price they are able to obtain in today’s market for cattle hides. In recent comments to local media, one senior representative of a major packer firm said the sale of the hide in recent years covered around 80% of the cost slaughter, but that, with a recent decline in hide prices, now covers only 50%.
