Meat industry walks away from EU ‘green product’ exercise

07/07/2017
COTANCE, the leather sector’s representative body in the European Union, has confirmed that the meat industry has formally left the group of industries working together to secure ‘green’ status for products and by-products that come from cows.

Leather and other industries taking part in the exercise have argued consistently since the start of the exercise in 2013 that meat should take a much larger share of the upstream environmental footprint of livestock farming. Meat industry representatives have walked away after nearly four years of work, including a number of pilot exercises, because of what they perceive as unfair treatment.
