Workers protest as Italian tanner announces move to Spain

23/05/2017
Reports from Italy say workers have staged a protest over job cuts at a tannery near Monza. The protest began on May 22, the reports say, after the company, Motta Alfredo, said it was cutting back on production in Italy and moving some operations to a factory it already has in Spain.

Motta Alfredo has been producing leather in Cinisello Balsamo for more than 100 years. It started off processing small skins for gloving leather and now specialises in aniline and semi-aniline leathers.

In 2008 it opened a subsidiary specialising in shearling double-face leathers in Talavera de la Reina, 130 kilometres west of Madrid. Workers in Italy have told local radio that around 20 jobs out of 50 at Cinisello Balsamo will go.

Trade union SOL Cobas has confirmed the reports about the protests.
