COTANCE to move health and safety project forward
15/05/2017
As part of a wider European initiative, COTANCE and industriAll developed an Online interactive Risk Assessment (OiRA) tool in 2010 and made it free to access for all interested parties in 2013. According to official data, the number of OiRA accounts created with the tanning tool is 1,672, while the number of risk assessments carried out is 1,993, topping the rankings of all other sectors. The tanning tool has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese, increasing its reach.
It’s a tool that has been of particular benefit to small and medium-sized tanneries, allowing them to make a self-assessment of health and safety risks, select good practice measures for preventing workplace incidents and develop their own risk assessment reports.
Now the social partners will move the project forward, working with two outside bodies. Following tender exercises, they have selected specialist Belgium-based OSH consultancy Prevent to carry out an update of the online tool, and the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) at the University of Northampton to conduct and analyse survey on how companies in the leather sector set OSH standards and monitor work conditions in their supply chains.
ICLT will launch the survey in September 2017 and provide its analysis of the results in time for a conference planned to take place in September 2018.
