ICT publishes new guidelines for tanners pending changes to international contracts

The International Council of Tanners (ICT) has issued new guidelines on the purchase of raw materials, following meetings in Hong Kong at the end of March.

The organisation has made it clear that the new guidelines do not represent a revision of the international contracts that the industry has in place, but it said that, “pending any agreement with the International Council of Hide, Skins and Leather Traders Associations (ICHSLTA) on possible amendments to International Contracts Number 6 and Number 7” it wanted to furnish tanners with guidance on aspects that they should include in their buying contracts with their suppliers.

These include a commitment on the transparency of the origin of hides, as well as chemical and environmental legal compliance. “The seller guarantees full compliance of the products with the legislation on chemicals and environment in force in the buyer’s country (or other country specifically indicated) and a clear commitment for an efficient use of preservative tools (such as salt),” it says.
