Packer and tanning group Tyson has said it will expand its efforts to “create a better workplace” at its production facilities.

Chief operations officer, Noel White, said on making the announcement that Tyson has “sound workplace practices in place”, but wants to do better. Steps towards making improvements will include training, an increased focus on workplace safety and on helping workers with life skills.

Tyson Foods employs 114,000 people, of whom 95,000 work in its US production facilities. These include 13 beef plants and six hide processing plants across the US, which give the company a 24% share of the total US slaughter capacity.

Ongoing “better workplace” aims include a 15% reduction each year in worker injury and illness and a 10% year-on-year improvement in worker retention.
