US hide exports up, but wet blue decline continues
19/04/2017
New figures from the US Hide Skin and Leather Association show that tanners and traders there exported just over 970,000 wet blue hides in January and February 2017, compared to more than 1.1 million for the same months in 2016, a decline of 12%.
This pattern repeats itself when we look at export values. In the first two months of this year, hide exports brought in a total of just over $335 million, up by 9.8% year on year. Again, wet salted hides contributed most to this, bringing in $246.5 million, growth of more than 20%.
But export revenues from shipments of wet blue over these two months reached $91 million, which is 10% down on the corresponding figure for 2016.
