New Lanxess-Dow relationship brings two new binders to market

The leather business unit at specialty chemicals manufacturer Lanxess is expanding with the addition of two new binders, Hydrholac CL-20 Emulsion and Opti-Matt AD-20 Duller.

Lanxess said on announcing the new products that they are aimed at the high-end automotive leather segment; they were originally developed by the Dow Chemical Company but are now being marketed by Lanxess.

The relationship between the two chemical companies means that Dow is responsible for the research, development and production of a number of specialty chemicals, while Lanxess has taken responsibility for marketing, sales and technical customer service.

“Following extensive testing during the evaluation phase, the new binders were rated positively by manufacturers of automotive leather,” says Thomas Brackemeyer, head of organic leather chemicals at Lanxess. He added that there is already a high level of interest in the market for the two products.

Hydrholac CL-20 Emulsion is a transparent acrylic binder for high-quality topcoats with medium hardness. Finishes produced using this binder exhibit high levels of flexibility, particularly in cold conditions, and of resistance to discolouration in heat. The aqueous emulsion also results in good rub and abrasion resistance.

For its part, Opti-Matt AD-20 Duller is an aqueous matting agent for high-quality finishes. The milky white dispersion is primarily used for matting topcoats, particularly for automotive or furniture leather.

These two binders will typically be applied together, Lanxess said at the time of the announcement, resulting in a much lower polishing effect than conventional, silica-based matting agents.
