Sheep meat consumption will grow, Australian study says

Mutton and lamb consumption is growing, according to a new study published by Meat & Livestock Australia, but is unlikely to increase its share of overall meat consumption globally from current levels of around 5%.

The study said global consumption of sheep meat will increase over the next decade from just over 14 million tonnes per year now to almost 18 million tonnes per year in 2025, but it says consumption of beef, veal, poultry and pork will increase too.

There is better news for sheep meat producers in terms of price. Meat & Livestock Australia said sheepmeat sold globally for the same price as poultry in the 1990s but is now 2.5 times more expensive than poultry. Sheep meat then overtook pork in terms of price in 2001 and is the second-most expensive meat today after beef.
