Brazil reports beef export growth despite scandal

In spite of a scandal that hit the industry in mid-March, Brazil’s beef sector registered export growth of almost 10% in the first quarter of 2017.

Official figures from the ministry of industry, external commerce and service said beef exports over the three-month period had grown by 9.3% to bring in more than $3 billion in export revenues.

The ministry’s head of statistics, Herlon Brandão, said action the government had taken immediately after news of the scandal broke (federal police raided packing plants and said food safety inspectors had taken bribes, sparking fears over the suitability of some meat consignments) had proved crucial.
