Leathergoods body welcomes return of consumer credit idea

CIMA, an organisation representing small leathergoods manufacturers, has welcomed the news that Argentina’s government will reinstate a consumer-credit initiative that in the past boosted sales by millions of dollars.

In 2014 and 2015, the government allowed consumers to use approved credit cards to buy a list of goods made in Argentina in interest-free instalments from participating retailers. The programme was called Ahora 12 (Now 12) because consumers were able to pay for their purchases in 12 instalments.

At the end of this initial exercise, the government said leathergoods and footwear was the sector that had achieved the second-highest sales in volume and the fourth-highest in revenues in the months in which the initiative ran. Around 14,000 manufacturers benefited and the sector as a whole brought in an extra $10 million per week as a result of Ahora 12.

There will be less time to pay when the initiative gets under way again under the titles Ahora 6 and Ahora 3, but CIMA has pledged its support nonetheless.

The organisation’s president, Ariel Aguilar, said in comments to local media that his member companies have seen sales fall by around 25% in just over a year and he said any measure to help boost consumption would be welcome. Belts, purses, wallets and other leathergoods products will be on the approved list.
