Turkish tannery sets its sights high

In spite of the challenges facing the Turkish leather industry at the moment (external trade with the important Russian market and tourist visitors to Turkey are both in decline) one of its most prominent representatives has said it intends to cement a place as one of the world’s top tanneries.

Sepiciler, which produces soling, vegetable- and chrome-tanned leathers at its site in Torbali near Izmir, has prominent customers in Turkey and overseas. It is Turkey’s only representative, so far, in the Tannery of the Year programmes, winning the regional award for Europe in 2013 and, in 2016, became Turkey’s first Leather Working Group-accredited facility.

In recent comments, one of its directors, Yesim Sepici, said the company will now work to obtain accreditation for ISO standards 14001 and 27001. “This will increase our prestige,” she said. “And in the coming years, we can expect to be among the 20 most important tanneries in the world.”
