‘Olive’ leather helps German saddler win sustainability award

28/03/2017
German saddlery brand Johannes Stübben has won a sustainability award at the Equitana industry event in Essen for a product that uses wet-green leather.

Wet-green is a tannage based on residues from the olive oil industry, principally the leaves of the olive trees, which are traditionally discarded and burned. German tanner Heller-Leder began making the product in 2011 and wet-green now functions as a standalone business based in Reutlingen.

Stübben has used it in a dressage saddle called True Nature, which a judging panel at Equitana decided was worthy of the show’s 2017 sustainability award.
