Low-value hides may go to waste
The exclusive Leather Pipeline market intelligence report in our Leatherbiz Weekly electronic newsletter has warned that although demand is healthy for high-quality raw material and premium finished leather, especially in the accessories, furniture and automotive markets, the situation for lower-quality material is starkly different.

In the latest edition of the Leather Pipeline report on March 21, there is even a suggestion that some hides could go to waste.

“With the focus on high-quality and high prices, the demand for larger yields and more natural leathers has constantly risen and can now be barely met,” the report says. “At the same time, low-quality raw materials have lost their market share and many hides have been left unused in factories around the globe. It is difficult to make a serious valuation of these materials but it appears unrealistic that they can be sold at cost price. They could simply be disposed of.”
