February figures bring no relief for Volkswagen in China

20/03/2017
Automotive group Volkswagen sold 686,900 vehicles across all of its brands in the month of February 2017, a fall of 2.6% compared to the same month last year.

China remains the group’s biggest single market, accounting for one-third of global sales at 223,000 shipments in February, a decline year on year of 1.9%. With a particularly slow January in the Chinese market, the Volkswagen group’s sales there in the first two months of this year were down by  9.6% compared to the same period in 2016.

Over the same period, sales picked up in the US, which has been a difficult market for the group since the scandal over emissions began in September 2015. In January and February 2017, the Volkswagen group sold 84,300 cars, a rise compared to the same months in 2016 of 13.6%. The group also took encouragement from a 12.5% increase in sales in central and eastern Europe, where it sold 105,500 cars in the first two months of this year.
