150 years and counting for US tannery
Specialist Pennsylvania-based veg-tan leather producer Wickett & Craig of America celebrated its 150th anniversary on March 17. The company has its roots in Toronto, where it began producing leather in 1867. Its move across the border to Pennsylvania came because Toronto’s bid to host the Olympic Games in 1996, although unsuccessful, led to a programme of land acquisition by the city authorities, including the land the tannery stood on.

Links to Toronto are still strong because the current owner of Wickett & Craig is hide processor Bank Bros & Son Limited, which is based in Canada’s biggest city.

The tannery processes 400 jumbo steer hides from North America per day and has an output of 35,000 square-metres of finished leather per month, which it supplies to customers in the equestrian, high-end leathergoods and interior design markets. More recently, it has also begun to serve the footwear market, having developed its own waterproofing treatment for full-grain veg-tan leather.

Company principal, Dr Barry Bank, has said he believes the unusual vertical integration between a hide trader and a tannery sets Wickett & Craig apart in the global leather industry. He also points to its “extreme environmental friendliness” and its commitment to working as closely as it can with customers as key elements of its approach.

Underpinning all of this, of course, is that Wickett & Craig continues to produce what he refers to as leather that has high levels of quality, beauty and durability.
