Leather Pipeline confirms that brands want tanners to do more with less

Something that stands out in the report, however, which subscribers can read in full here, is a confirmation of a trend those attending the Milan events could observe among the tanning machinery providers exhibiting new technology there. Many of the solutions they had on show were geared towards allowing tanners to improve the quality of the finished leather they are able to make from lower-grade hides.
The Leather Pipeline report now states that a number of high-end leathergoods brands told tanners at Lineapelle that they have no intention of paying more for the leather they buy in the months ahead. In fact, to help these high-end brands keep growing, they have told tanners they want leather made from lower-cost raw material.
They still want the finished leather to be beautiful and to meet their exacting standards, but they want tanners to achieve this without having to rely totally on using premium-quality raw material.
“There is a limit in the raw material available to the premium, top-quality end,” it says. “More money would not be able to buy more hides and skins of suitable quality. Consequently further growth can only be achieved if lower-quality selections, which are available, can be turned into something unique and elegant.”
