New Australia deal is bad news for Indonesian cattle breeders, association says

President Joko Widodo completed a formal visit to Australia at the end of February and one of the subjects that came up for discussion was cattle imports. Indonesia had measures in place imposing a limit of 350 kilos on the weight of feeder cattle shipping from Australia to its trading partner. On Mr Widodo’s return, he announced that this weight limit would now rise to 450 kilos.
PPSKI has said the previous arrangement tied in with a local regulation that gives local breeders a minimum of 120 days’ work in fattening cattle up before slaughter. It said that when cattle weighing 450 kilos start arriving from Australia, local breeders will miss out.
